Some Anti Slice Golf Tips to use On Course
Even if you are a superhero, golf slicing can be a problem to you. It is to Tiger Woods now and again, and he is regarded by many as superhero. How often have you seen Tiger drive his ball way out left into that bunch of trees with his name? If you say ‘never’ you don’t watch golf.
Some rookie golfers will wonder why anti slice golf tips are necessary when players can simply aim left and get their ball roughly where they want it. Well, aiming left is certainly one way to counteract the effects of a slice, but is probably the worst way to do it, and it also cannot always be done. How do you aim 20 yards left and slice the ball into the fairway on a narrow fairway with a load of trees lining the left side? You can’t do it. But why are these anti slice tips necessary in the first place?
A Great Shot – Then it Curves Away Right
Imagine the scenario. You are having a great round, perhaps even one of your best, and on the way to a good score that can help you to lower your handicap when you drive the ball away down the fairway and you wait for it to land: another 250 yard plus drive. Then you look on in horror as the ball starts to drift out right, then further and further till it lands about 10 yards off the fairway but still in bounds.
You have sliced the ball. You don’t know how, but it happened, and you shrug and play your second. This too drifts slightly right but you salvage your par and go onto the next tee. Once again your ball curves away out right, but this time clatters into the trees. Once again you manage to scramble your par, but you know that you should really have birdied that hole. On the next tee your knees are trembling. What do you do now?
Recognizing a Slice and Knowing the Quick Fixes are Half the Battle
If you can recognize that you have started to slice the ball, and you know what you can do to counteract it until you get your round finished and get some help, then you can likely salvage your round without dropping any shots to par. This is where knowledge of these anti slice tips is necessary. Good golfers always have shots in their arsenal that they may never have to play, but know how to play should the situation ever arise when they are needed.
The slice tips are simple solutions, and it’s not so much the knowing how to play them that’s important, but more the knowing that they are possible temporary solutions for a slice. Take the first. Adjusting your grip to a stronger position. A slice is caused by the angle between the heel and toe of the golf club not being at ninety degrees square to the line of the stroke at the moment of impact.
If your swing is straight through the ball to the target then you can only slice the ball if your club is pointing backwards at the toe when it hits the ball. You can cure this by speeding up the time it takes for the club to come round straight on to the ball. This is achieved by strengthening your grip, or holding the club more to the right than normal. The club face then closes quicker and cures the slice.
This might not be a permanent cure since you still have to find out what caused it to happen, but it is good enough to get you round the course without too much damage being done to your score. If you were not aware of the cause of a slice, you would not know that this was a potential cure, so it is useful to have this knowledge in your armoury. Golf slices can literally happen out of the blue like this.
Check out Your Feet, Not Just your Grip
Another possible reason is that your feet are not placed quite right, and are causing you to hit the ball out slightly to the left. Now why should this cause the ball to curve right, I can hear you think? What happens is that your club face is still square to the intended line of the ball, as it should be, but your feet are causing you to swing to the left, and so swing across the ball with your club. Since the club face is still pointing at the target, and the line of the drive is to the left of it, the club face strikes the ball at a different angle than intended, and so puts a clockwise spin on it. This causes the slice.
The quick fix here is to change your stance so that your feet are aiming right towards the target. Once again, if you did not know about this, you would not have thought of moving your feet to change a curve in the flight of the golf ball.
These anti slice golf tips are all essential parts of a golfer’s knowledge, and tips that can be pulled out of the hat to be used in these rare, but critical, moments when knowing about them could make all the difference between a bad score and a good score, or between losing and winning.
